APPENDIX

ICONICS

During the history of human cognition, images appeared to be the most effective information medium, much older than written language. So it is quite natural that images, from petroglyphs and painting and up to photographs, television, optical and other images, are widely used by mankind. This has led to the idea of studying image as such, no matter how it was created, from the point of view of its internal structure, in order to extract from the image as much information on the object or the phenomenon it has been created from as possible. During the recent years the investigations in this field have greatly extended and formed a new scientific branch - iconics (icon, from Greek "eikon" - image, pattern) studying general image properties and defining aims and tasks for image transformation, processing and reproduction using all possible methods and ways. Iconics does not replace or absorb specific disciplines studying certain processes of image creation, transmission and registration. Iconics concerns image itself and its properties. Iconics considers an image as a higher-order physical system treated from the position of physics of nonequilibrium open systems and self-organization processes connected with it. From the modern point of view, gain of information (including images) from the environment, or negative entropy (negentropy) extraction, is the basis of vital functions of any organism.

The phenomenon of human vision is very important for iconics. But wide research practice in the field of iconics has shown that it always concerns all aspects of modern concepts of imagery and its functions: digital processing, image creation and perception, noise effect, etc. Therefore, modern iconics is a scientific branch studying all problems connected with image research and application.
